With the demise of the lavish, high-budget Colgate-Palmolive Unit in 1952 its former members had to look for other work. A proposal was made to use the scripts of the popular US radio show, Blondie (1939-1950), to broadcast an Australian version. When a copyright dispute ended this project it was decided to create a new series called ‘Life With Dexter’ with ex-Colgate Unit member Willie Fennell playing the Dagwood Bumstead role as bumbling Dexter Dutton. Joining Dexter were Jessie, his somewhat sharp-tongued wife, and their two children, Ashley (aka Ashleigh) and Janie, who were forever trading insults and put-downs. Adult actor Ray Hartley played Ashley while 14-year-old Amber Mae Cecil played daughter Janie (later played by Beryl Marshall). No less than four actors played the role of Jessie. The series ran on the Macquarie Network between 1954 and 1962.
